About Me

Welcome to Vincent Sell Creative. I am a graphic designer located in North Central Indiana, working out of Warsaw, Indiana. As a graphic designer, I am a craftsman who labors toward better design in every project I take on. I believe design to be a process of refinement, each step of the process is one step closer to a more precise and successful design. My work is deeply thought out, and the decisions I make are purposeful. When design is purposeful, it is work worth doing.

My Story

The summer after my eleventh birthday I learned how to drive. Not a car, that would be illegal, but horses. My grandfather, Papi used to drive horse drawn carriages for a living, and that summer he handed me the reigns and taught me how to drive. He started simple, the basics. He taught me how to hold the reigns, how queue the horses to move, and how to give the lines some slack so the horses could pull with more power.

He taught me an important lesson. He taught me the importance of “Tight Loose.” If I held the reigns too tight I would hold the horses back from using their full strength. If I let the lines be too loose the horses would take off. I had to learn to find the right balance between holding on too tight and too loose. We live life in the same tension, and it is that tension I try to master in my own craft, design.

I learned many things from my Papi over the years. His example of doing what you love led me into the design craft, and the principle of “Tight Loose” is a principle I use each day in my design work. When I approach a design I want to handle it with so much care it is precise and polished, but I don’t want to handle it too tightly or else the finished design lacks an element of joy and humanity.

I believe good design to be more than creating something beautiful. Creating something beautiful is art, not design. Design is purposeful, it has use, a function. Good design is layered with history, meaning, and function, but those areas never should make it so complex that is becomes cumbersome. Good design is balance, and balance is simple.
