Grace College has a theme each year which is the spiritual focus of the campus. I have been involved with the process of creating the theme for the last 3 years, but this design was solely my creation from start to finish. The logo is used on several swag items for the students which have different graphic restrictions.

The Philippians Sermon Journal is the answer to how to make a useful tool for pastors from a scholarly commentary on a book of the Bible. From the inception of the project to the time it was complete, I was deeply involved with every aspect of this journal. I did all of the quoting with the printer, making sure to stay within budget while producing the most professional result. I communicated through each revision and made sure our timeline and purpose were met. I developed an attractive system that created flow in the piece making the journal both attractive and intuitive.

One of the greatest challenges to every in-house designer is the task of recreating the brand they work with every day. There is a delicate balance between keeping the visual identity consistent and providing the customer with a delightful surprise.

Every year Grace College puts out a new viewbook, the flagship for their enrollment cycle (or what business people would call a "sales season"). This booklet provides the prospect with the information they need to know about the college to determine if they are interested enough to apply. It also provides the first look into who this college is.

It is important.

Here is what my role was with this piece:

1. Pitch the concept

2. Quote, budget, plan, timeline

3. Communicate with multiple departments about changes

4. Collect the proper approvals

5. Work with our copywriter to refine and develop the content

6. Select photography

7. Edit photography

8. Oh yeah, and design thing.

Needless to say, I was married to this project for a while. I'm very happy with how it turned out, and Grace College is on track to have its largest freshman class to date.

One of my first loves is mark making. Here are some of my marks.

Escape E

This is an escaping E for an escape room logo I recently designed. I love logos which are incredibly simple while at the same time intuitive and I think this mark does both nicely. 

Connection Mark

Very rarely does anything get accomplished without good connection. This is a mark I created to represent those important connections we make to accomplish big things and small things. 

International Women’s Day

This is a little mark I made on International Women’s Day to celebrate the success of women all around the world.

Sustainable Mark

In an exploration of the word "sustainable" I came up with a number of icons which could represent the idea. This is one of my note worthy concepts for a icon that represents sustainable. 

Trash Nugget

A trash nugget is something that is actually good that for one reason or another ends up in the trash. It could be repurposed for something else if it were to be retrieved.

A person's college years can be some of their best, but if we are honest, it isn't "the college experience" that is as important as what they go on to do after they graduate. This is a key point in every college's sales pitch, but every college does it differently which is what I set out to do with this brochure.

I stripped this brochure of college students with backpacks, on a sidewalk by the largest tree on campus and traded those things for the dreams of a young girl on a bridge (this is lake central Indiana we are talking about). I also did something bold and different, I used a transparent foil to capture the idea that college is the next step of "Chasing Your Dream."

My goal for this piece was to refresh and capture imaginations with artful surprises.

This is probably one of the largest undertakings I have every been a part of. Each year Grace College creates what they call “The Viewbook.” I had the opportunity to be the lead designer on this piece. It took a huge team of people to get this project to where it is and I am super appreciative of all the amazing people who made this great piece happen.

I submitted this piece to the 34th Annual Educational Advertising Awards competition and it won the Gold Award.

One of the ways I like to give back with my design skills is donating discount or free work to non-profits. One place I have had the joy of working with has been my church www.communitygrace.org. I was asked to assist in the logo redesign. The concept was created by a collaboration of half-a-dozen people and I did the work of creating the digital assets. 

The logo is slowly being introduced into different mediums the church uses to get the good news out. It is great to see a church that has been part of the community for many years realize they need to update their look to stay fresh.

Along with being a college, Grace College also has a seminary. The Seminary Viewbook is one of the main pieces used in attracting new seminary students. It details the heart of the program and provides an inside view of the school.

Most years I work with the Sports Information team at Grace College to create an exciting new Media Guide cover for the upcoming school year.  The guide I designed for the '16-'17 school year won Second in the Nation and was voted best cover by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A former colleague of mine, Matt Frazier was working on a website for Dr. Chris Hull, and he was having a little bit of difficulty coming up with a logo for Dr. Hull so I decided to help him out. The collaboration produced a great result as I designed the icon portion of the logo and Matt Frazier added the rest of the text. The logo has been used in the final design of Dr. Hull's website.

Grace College’s athletic teams put on summer sports camps every summer. This is the brochure I created to promote the camps.

When a college recruits new students, one of the main tools they rely on is the t-shirt give away. I designed this t-shirt a few years back for Grace College and since then it has become one of the loved giveaways. Thousands of these shirts have been printed and given away, in many size and colors. The design showcases the lake which the school is nestled next to.

The second most important marketing piece Grace College uses to showcase their programs are their department brochures. I have been in charge of the creation of these brochures for the last few years. The look of the brochures follows the look of the viewbook.

One thing I love in life are classic black with three white striped Adidas classic soccer boots. There are four kinds: Samba Classic, Mundial Team, Copa Mundial, and World Cup. These are four little marks I create to represent them.

Most of us get part way through our work week and feel exhausted. I call this the Midweak. At this time, we are in our greatest need of some motivation. The purpose of motivation is to move us from point A to point B: moveations.

Thinking through this concept I came up with the incline mark. The mark symbolizes the peak of the middle of the week and the drive to finish. I also create two terms.

Midweak

Definition: the feeling of weakness you get part way through the work week.

Moveations

Definition: Motivation specifically to move you towards a goal or direction.

Yogi's Paddleboard

A few years ago I had the opportunity to work on a logo for a new yoga company that would have two branches. One of the branches would be called Yogi's Paddleboard. The paddleboard portion of the business could offer yoga classes that would take place on a paddleboard. The extra element of balance would increase the intensity of the workout. The company was looking for a rustic, stone yoga master to be the emblem of their new brand. This is the wet stone yoga master.

Yogi's Hot House

A few years ago I had the opportunity to work on a logo for a new yoga company which would have two branches. One of the branches would be called Yogi's Hot House. The hot house would be focused on providing yoga classes in a sauna like room where participants could sweat out their stress and worries. The company was looking for a rustic, stone yoga master to be the emblem of their new brand. This is the hot stone yoga master.

I love when I get to work with people who are passionate about their work. A friend of mine approached me to create a crest for a club soccer team he was starting up. I couldn’t say no.

He had a name and he knew what colors he wanted to use but had no idea what look he was going for. We looked at some club team crests he liked and I gave him a few options.

We landed on this look and his team has been rocking ever since.
